The third Monday of January has been awarded the gloomy title ‘Blue Monday’, believed to be the most depressing day of the year, due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of those dreaded unpaid credit card bills.
At Bliss, we don’t believe anyone should ever feel blue, and January is no exception – especially when there is so much to be grateful for in life!
Here are 5 blissful ways to beat the winter blues this year:
1. Positive thoughts mean positive vibes
To most people’s surprise, there is in fact no science behind the whole idea of Blue Monday. It’s entirely normal to feel a bit down about going back to work after the Christmas break.
Whilst we all dread the winter and January, if we continually tell ourselves how horrible it is, chances are we will feel horrible!
Try and change your internal monologue about this time of year and focus on the positives in your life.
2. Find something to look forward to
Having things to look forward to and get excited about is a great way to motivate ourselves to get through the troublesome times.
If we feel like we have nothing exciting planned for the week ahead, this thought can get us down. So, make a list of all the things that you have planned in the next few weeks or months and give yourself something to feel positive about.
This helps remind us the sky isn’t always grey, and there is in fact, life beyond the blues!
3. Find your smile
Starting your Monday with a smile will mean starting your entire week with a smile!
Regardless of how low you are feeling, there is always going to be something that never fails to put a smile on your face, whether it’s making your favourite dish or going for a fresh morning stroll.
Find out what it is and be sure to start your day with it.
4. Get a blissful night’s sleep
At Bliss, we know that the amount and quality of sleep you get on a Sunday can make a huge difference to the mood that you wake up in on Monday morning.
If we do not sleep well, or we do not get enough sleep, then we are likely to feel irritable and be reluctant to start the week! See the weekend as an opportunity to re-energise yourself, perform some self-TLC and ready yourself for anything January may throw at you!
5. Compliment others.
Make it your mission to compliment five people before mid-day.
This may sound like a strange way to make yourself happy but at Bliss, spreading happiness to others is not only our mantra but often the best way to warm our own hearts! As women, we have plenty to worry about already without the blues – so let’s help each other through difficult times and show love and compassion to one another!
