Women are blazing new travel trails – women only travel
WOMEN are packing their bags and heading off on vacation by themselves, new figures show.
A survey of 5000 women by the Last Minute website found almost half had taken a holiday alone and are a growing section of the travel market, with women only travel companies increasing by 230 per cent in the past six years.
Solo traveller Clara Cooney, 38, said her decision to travel alone to the all-female Bliss Sanctuary for Women retreat in Bali was based on a need to withdraw from her busy life.
“I have a hectic job and social life and wanted to go somewhere that I could switch off my phone and laptop to do yoga and have 90-minute massages every day,” Ms Cooney said. “I didn’t want to hear from anyone. It was only a week and I thought I deserved to be a bit selfish.”
Another survey by the National Association of Women Business Owners found that 57 per cent of women travel solo 25 per cent of the time and 17 per cent do so almost all of the time. One of the main reasons is that women enjoy different types of vacations, with 87 per cent appreciating beautiful scenery compared with only 72 per cent of men.
Research by the Gutsy Traveller group found that 84 per cent of women travelling alone are aged 31-55, with the average 47.
The owner of Bliss, Zoe Watson, said women often found it difficult to find a travel partner who could go away at the same time and wanted the same travel experience.
“Travelling alone is also a great way to boost self-confidence and a lot more women are single these days,” Ms Watson said. “They either haven’t been married or come out of a long-term relationship. A lot of people travel after significant things have happened in their lives, either good or bad, and they see travel as a chance to get some perspective.”
